Tras dos intensos días de deliberaciones en el Cónclave, la Iglesia Católica tiene nuevo líder espiritual. El cardenal estadounidense Robert Francis Prevost ha sido elegido como el 267º Sucesor de San Pedro, adoptando el nombre de León XIV.
El anuncio oficial fue realizado desde el tradicional balcón central de la Basílica de San Pedro por el cardenal protodiácono Dominique Mamberti, quien pronunció la histórica fórmula: «Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: habemus Papam!» — “Les anuncio con gran alegría: ¡Tenemos Papa!”
“Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Robertum Franciscum Sanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ Cardinale Prevost, qui sibi nomen imposuit León XIV.” Fue como fue anunciado el nombre que asumirá el nuevo Vicario de Cristo en la Tierra.
La elección se concretó tras la tercera votación del día jueves, en una jornada marcada por la expectativa. El humo blanco que emergió de la chimenea de la Capilla Sixtina a media tarde desató la alegría de miles de fieles congregados en la Plaza de San Pedro.
Prevost, de nacionalidad estadounidense y peruana, hasta ahora prefecto del Dicasterio para los Obispos, se convierte en uno de los pocos papas norteamericanos en la historia y el primero en adoptar el nombre de León desde León XIII, quien gobernó entre 1878 y 1903.
Con su elección, se inicia una nueva etapa para la Iglesia, que aguarda con expectativa las primeras palabras y orientaciones pastorales del Papa León XIV.
